Sick Kid, Rainy Weather, and A Little Bit of Knitting

Kaity has some kind of flu bug so I've been up since 2:30am sitting here with her. Here's hoping she doesn't pass it on to anyone else in the house. At least Shawn was able to sit up with her for part of the night so I could get some sleep. I got about 5 hours of sleep so I may be able to make it through the day. At least I don't have to cook dinner tonight.

I finished my moms fingerless mitts.



The pattern is Beth's Fingerless Gloves. I'm definitely going to have to make a pair for myself. I still haven't tired of knitting stuff with beads. It's definitely one of my favorite things to do.

I'm making decent progress on my Rainbow Hue Shift Afghan.




The first picture is Section 1 completed and the second picture is the start of Section 3. I'd definitely make another one of these. Kaity's actually requested one of her own.

I started a pair of socks for my mom.



The pattern is WonderWings and the yarn is JulieSpins MCN355. I love love love working with this yarn. I really like this designers patterns. This isn't the first pattern I've used from this designer and it definitely won't be the last.

My cardi is moving along slowly.



I haven't gotten very far on my Porch Swing Cardi. I'm sure I'll pick it back up soon. I just had to put it aside after ripping out over 15 inches of work. It would have drove me nuts to keep looking at the color difference so the only real option I had was to rip and start over.

Dishcloth.



I'm doing the dishcloth KAL again to give me a small project to knit on. This is Aprils mid moth KAL.

Right now we're under a cold snap. We woke up to frozen water in the dogs water dish outside which made me doubly happy to have not planted tomatoes. I almost picked up a few tomatoes the other day. Next week we're suppose to warm back up into the 70s so I'm thinking the garden will be planted next weekend.

Crying Shame

We finally found out how hard our school was hit after the failed school levy. It's not as bad as some of the others in the district but it's definitely not good. We lost the HIP HOP program for the whole district, which was an after school program that helps K-8 students with math, reading, writing and study skills. We lost our Para in the resource room, all of our library aides, 15% of the building budget (who knows what that will do, guess the kids will have to do without lights and heat for 20 minutes every day to save money), and our intervention specialist (she helps teachers with ideas for dealing with academically and behaviorally challenged kids.

Sadly, most who voted against the levy were doing so because they do not have kids in the school system and are on this no more taxes kick. It's one of the drawbacks to being in a town where there are a lot of empty nesters. Every year the cost of living goes up. Taxes and death are the two constants in this world. Do they really expect that the cost of running a school is going to stay the same? What freakin bubble world do these morons live in? See the levy would have raised property taxes around $15 per year for someone with a home valued at $100,000.....if I remember correctly. I know it was a small amount. $15 per year isn't much when you think about it. Hell one less trip to the casino would make up for that. That's 3 less trips to Starbucks for me. The school district was asking for a little shy of 1 million dollars. When you factor in that the school district is comprised of 15 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 2 high schools, I'd have to say that 1 million dollars is pretty damn reasonable. So instead of paying a little more each year on property taxes they voted no and now the kids are the ones paying for it. 24 teachers have lost their jobs, classroom sizes are going up, German language classes have been cut from Middle School and the kids are without the ability to recieve tutoring for free. What's next, band and art? Sure as hell won't be sports. It drives me crazy that schools put more priority on sports then actual education. 

Needless to say I'm sick of schools taking the beating from people who don't want to pay taxes. Watching these idiots in town with their picket signs for their tea party braggin about how they won because the levy was defeated and talking about doing away with our government and going back to a simpler Montana. One boob in town actually has a sign is his yard that says impeach Obama. Impeach him for what? That ignorance makes me laugh every time we drive by it. I swear our country's founding fathers have to be rolling in their grave with all the political BS going on right now. Never mind that some of these people who want to do away with our government completely, are now standing in the freebie line with their hands out for help from FEMA and the Red Cross because they had homes and property destroyed from all the flooding we've seen in this state. Oh shoot wait it's the presidents fault that we had heavy snowfall in the mountains this year or that it's been raining like crazy (gonna have to insert the sarcasm here and a few eyerolls since you can't see or hear me). Don't bitch about taxes and the federal government and then stand in the line to get help from said government when you need it. Talk about being hypocritical. 

Anyways, I could rant on and on about this place and the serious problems and lack of progression in this town but that would probably shoot my blood pressure through the roof. Instead I'll just move on to the knitting portion of the post which calms me and keeps me sane. Plus every city has it's problems so it's not as if Great Falls is any different then any other city in the US. Find me a perfect city and I shall flock to it when retirement hits in 1 year, 3 months. If not I'll be bloggin from Boise, ID and happy to be away from the messed up town.

I powered through my moms Rosalind shawl (ravelry)(non ravelry) so that she could take it home with her. 

The yarn is Dream in Color Baby and the colorway is Blue Sage purchased from TLE. I used 4mm megatamas from Earthfaire. DIC Baby is a really nice yarn but I'm really wishing I would have used a thicker yarn. Baby is more like a light finger weight yarn and the pattern called for fingering weight yarn that is on the heavier side. I'm thinking I should have gone with Smooshy instead. Oh well, I'll just have to make another shawl for mom. Maybe this time I will make one out of worsted weight yarn for those chilly days. 

I finished the dishrag made with Knit Picks Dishie.

I really enjoyed knitting with this yarn. It has great stitch definition and worked up beautifully with US 7 needles. It's been pressed into service and I'll report back after a few trips through the washer and dryer on how it's holding up. No bleeding in the dish water so that's good. I have a few dishrags using the Peaches and Cream and Sugar and Cream that still to this day bleed and they've been used countless times. 

Bree's socks are making great progress.

A few more trips into town and I'll have these babies done.  They actually have about two inches more on them since this photo was taken. My parents were here for a visit so the blog post got pushed back until after they left. I need to have Bree pick out a solid yarn for the next pair since they have a lace pattern and a fancy ruffle on them.

I'm joining in on Camp Loopy. It's my kind of camping. :) The yarn has been ordered so now I just need to sit back and patiently wait for the yarn to get here. I order Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine in the Berry Pie Mix and Salt & Pepper colorways to knit Whippoorwill (ravelry).

On the gardening news front I planted 4 tomato plants. Two cherry tomatoes, one early girl and one big beef. Even with all the rain and lack of sun they are doing good. The cherry tomatoes each have one tiny green tomato and tons of blooms. The early girl and big beef still haven't shown any tomatoes yet but they are blooming quite well and some of those blooms have closed so I have a feeling I'll soon be seeing more green tomatoes. We're going to have sun for the next two days so I'm hoping that will help.

A Little of This and That

As I type it's a balmy -22F outside. Yes folks, the extreme cold is back again.....brrrrr. It's suppose to warm up a bit this weekend and snow some more. I was reading in the paper the other day (before this last snow storm dumped a good 3-4 inches of snow) that we'd already seen 27.5 inches of snow in the month of Feb. So with the last storm we should be up above 30 inches and then it's suppose to snow all weekend too. Wonder if we'll hit 40 inches. These snow totals are not normal for Feburary. Our average snow total for Feb is around 7 inches. I don't think we've quite broke the record yet but I think we're getting close.

Lets see, what have I been up too. Well there was a test knit which I can't show you but I have been working on my Feb YOSS socks.

They're my basic toe up recipe. I'm past the heel now but I'm to lazy to take a picture. The yarn is Twisted Fiber Art Kabam! in the Saucy colorway. I have to say they're my favorite handdyed self striping yarn pusher. I love how their colors blend. I was lucky enough to get a spot in their sock yarn club. 

I've also been working on Shawn's sweater and am almost done with the hood. I've decided that when I'm done with the hood I'm going to rip back the sleeves a few inches to make them wider. Their going to be way to small for Shawn's arms.

I finally got a cup holder for my spinning wheel (Etsy site).

I've been wanting one of these for while now but kept putting it off. When we moved the living room around I lost my spot to put my cup when I'm spinning. So the cup holder was kind of important. I won't be spinning with an open topped cup because I don't want fuzz in my drink. I have several cups with lids that I'll use I just happened to have a cup of iced tea when the box came in.

Crazy Weather

The 10-12 inches of snow we had the other day is just about gone and the weather has warmed up. Of course with that warm weather we've been having high winds but at least it's not freezing right now. The constant up and down of the temps/weather is killing my joints. Any time there is a major fluctuation in the weather my joints start hurting and it takes several days to start feeling normal again. I think the cold is suppose to be back toward the end of this week. 

Silly me, I looked up the weather for Boise, ID and wished I was there instead. Our cold and snow are coming back while they're stay it bit warmer. I'm so ready to go home it's not even funny. I do find it odd at times that this So. Cal girl (born and raised) now calls Idaho home. I have the chorus from the Beach Boys song Sloop John B stuck in my head....let me go home, Let me go home, I wanna go home, let me go home, why don't you let me go home. Anyone who has every gazed upon my iPod will say without a doubt that I have a very eclectic taste in music. My iPod is a very crazy mix of music that includes music from the Beach Boys, Kenny Chesney, Creedance Clearwater Revival, The Temptations, Patsy Cline, Metallica, George Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Alannis Morissette  and on and on and on. Although Rascal Flatts and Kenny Chesney have the biggest play time on my iPod and country is the largest selection of music on there. Kenny Chesney's No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem is my happy song. There's just something about that song that makes me smile every time.

I'm working like crazy on Shawn's sweater. 

It now has both sleeves.....woot! I'm working on the hood right now although it's on hold for the next few days while I finish up a test knit. I'm so close I can almost taste it, which is a silly thing to say since it's a wool sweater and wouldn't taste good at all. I swear on all that is holy Shawn will wear this damn thing even if he has to lose 50 pounds to do it. Actually the only thing I'm worried about is the sleeves. I think I'm going to have to rip back about half the sleeve and work less increases because the sleeves seem a bit skinny. I've already cut out at least 8 decreases but I think the sleeves are still going to be snug. I know it's going to block out a little bit wider after it's washed if the measurements are correct from my gauge swatches. This sweater has taken me almost 2 years to finish. It's mostly because it's nothing but cables so it's a labor intensive pattern, very well written but very labor intensive. I kept throwing it to the side for more desirable projects that don't require as much concentration. Not to self when knitting sweaters for Shawn, pick something with less cables. Lots of cables for kids sweaters, good....lots of cables for dude that needs a 50" chest size sweater, bad!

I recieved my TLE swap package.

It was full of yummy goodies (the girls and I killed the homemade peanut butter cookies in nothing flat), a lovely neckwarmer (l love neckwarmers/cowls), and Dream in Color Smooshy. I have an obsession with DIC Smooshy, well actually I love their worsted weight too. I think the only other two yarn brands I might have more of are Zen Yarn Garden and Miss Babs.

I ordered a few things from Knit Picks. 

The books were on sale so I went ahead and picked them up. To round out the order I picked up a skein of Chroma sock yarn to try, a smaller niddy noddy, and some extension connectors to make longer cables....I probably won't use them often but it'll be nice to have them on hand when I need them instead of waiting for them to get here in the mail. I went ahead and paid for the extra shipping. It was a slurge since I normally go for the snails pace shipping. It's the last time I'll do that. I forgot how absolutely stupid my Fedex delivery guy is. I normally don't deal with him because he only handles the express mail package and most stuff I buy goes FedEx ground. They lady who delivers the ground packages is awesome. The idiot delivered the package to my neighbor across the street whos house number looks nothing like mine. We thought the package was stolen off our door step (something that has never happened to us since we've been here) and we were afraid that the new water delivery guy might have been the one to do it. Thankfully my neighbor came home a few hours later and brought the package to us. The quicker shipping was sooooo not worth the extra headache.

I also got my TLE order in the other day. 

I had like $55 in store credits which if I spent it all it would be close to free shipping so I decided to throw in enough stuff to make sure I got free shipping. The roving is Perchance to Spin Polworth wool (haven't tried that one yet), a skein of bright Trekking XXL (you know how I love me some self striping), the newly dyed Loopy Legends in the MomSue's Yellowstone Sunset (Lorna's Laces is now dying the Loopy Legends colorways), and a skein of Bugga in the Miss Spider colorway.

They're both lovely but I think I like the skein died by Lorna's Laces. Sue has been a good friend of mine for a few years now and I hope that this summer I will be able to visit with her. Shawn and I are planning on a weekend trip to Yellowstone with the girls this summer. Lets hope that the military doesn't screw it up with another stupid inspection.....I have a feeling that they will though. I couldn't resist getting the new skein of her colorway. It's so gorgeous. I've seen sunsets here similar to the ones she sees in Wyoming and they're so beautiful you can't help but stop to look at the sky. They're so full of pinks, purples and yellows. Montana's not called Big Sky Country for nothing. The wide open sky make for some very gorgeous sunsets and on a clear day the blue goes on for miles and miles. 

I can finally post a picture of the socks I knit for my swap pal. 

The pattern is WonderWings (Ravelry) and the yarn is Fiber Optic Foot Notes sock yarn in the Smoky Teal Batik colorway. She loved her socks and the whole package I put together for her. I was so happy to hear that the package was an absolute sucess.

I'ts so hard being a puppy. I can't believe how big she's getting. She's 4 months old and weighing in close to 30 lbs.

Holy Cow It's Cold!

Not sure what the temps were yesterday morning when I woke up but I checked the weather around 9am and it was showing a balmy -37F outside. Brrrrr-Freakin-rrrrrrr. And of course in true Luvs2knit nature, I had to go out in the cold to go to a doctors appointment. Another RA checkup so I really couldn't cancel it since we're trying to get meds adjusted. Meds went up again but at least this time I have 60 days before I go back. I've been going in every 30 days. Unfortunately I still need to visit the lab vampires. I think I'll wait till later this week though since it's suppose to warm back up to more normal temps.

I have been doing a little knitting besides the stuff I can't show you.

I finished my YOSS Jan Socks. 

The pattern is Saint Brigid's Stockings (ravelry). The yarn is Dream in Color Classy. I was a bit worried that I wasn't going to have enough yarn but I still had plenty to spare when I finished. 

I started a pair of toe up socks for Bree.

I'm using some of the leftover yarn from my Rainbows & Clouds socks. I'm not very far into the socks but they never take very long to knit since her feet are so small. Basic toe up sock with a short row heel....nothing fancy.

Finally I'm making good progress on my toe up Opal socks.

I'm about an inch from starting the heel. These are my take along knitting project. Not thought involved, no pattern to bring with me, just a basic stockinette sock that I've knit so many time the pattern is permanent etched in my mind.

The first one is of her "helping me" take pictures. She was curious about what I was doing and shoved her nose right up infront of the camera. The second one is of her laying on the floor all pretty trying to get some of the pineapple that I was eating. Our dogs love pineapple and will beg for it every chance they get.

Where Oh Where Has the Sunshine Gone?

The sun keeps disappearing and we haven't seen it much here lately. I think it ran off to some place else like the Bahama's and I'm still contemplating going out in search of it. It's most likely where my motivation and lost cable needles are. It would be a lovely reunion for all of us. If only the plane tickets weren't so high. 

Sadly the knitting I'm working on is secret like type knitting which can make for boring blog posts. Between test knits and the knitting going on for my swap pal there isn't much to report on. 

Shall I distract you with a shot of the shawl pin I got  for my mom.

 

I haven't gotten a chance to work on the shawl lately but I couldn't resist picking this pin up when I came across it at The Loopy Ewe. I was buying some things for my swap pals box and need some small things to bump my order up to get free shipping not to mention the fact that I was really close to getting a $25 credit.

Penny is growing in leaps and bounds and Zeus has warmed up to her. He does growl and snap at her when she plays too rough which I expect because Penny is a lot bigger then Zeus now. Her 20 pounds of muscle can stomp poor 8 pound Zeus into the ground. Penny is starting to catch up on chasing after Zeus too. She's shedding that awkward puppy run and honing that quick Springer Spaniel sprint. Zeus still has the edge because he can corner fast and run without problems on the tile floor but if they had to run longer distances Penny would leave his little butt in the dust.

On a the military side we're getting closer and closer to retirement time. Shawn drops his retirement paperwork in Dec of this year and we'll be in the market for a house next spring/summer. I can't even begin to express how happy I am about this. When your active duty military you drop your retirement paperwork (you intention to retire) when you are one year out.

We've got a few job possibilities in Boise so we're looking at homes in the Boise area. We had originally tossed around the thoughts of moving to Coeur d'Alene but after much pondering we opted to go back to the Boise area. The summers are generally hotter in Boise but the winters are much more milder with less cold and subzero temps that cause severe joint pain for me. We've found some great houses in our price range, to bad we couldn't buy now and move. The girls and I will be moving next summer so we can get the girls settled in school. Shawn will follow us a few months later. Damn, I can't believe we're almost done with the military crap! I can't tell you how happy I am that retirement is so close. The only thing that could derail that is a set of orders out of here. Fingers crossed that orders are not on the horizon unless of course they are to Hawaii! I would sooooo not argue with a set of 3 year orders to Hawaii. I'd gladly go and not miss this damn snow and cold at all.

A Little Pre-Holiday Post

First off, before I start my post:

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all my blog friends. May you have a wonderful New Year. This will most likely be the last post of 2010 for me. I might try to do a recap of the year on New Years Eve but I make no promises. 

It's thawing outside....woohoo! The temps are a warmer and the snow is melting. It looks like we'll still have snow on the ground for Christmas so technically it'll be a white Christmas but no new snow is expected. I can't say that I'm disappointed. Ice jams made a mess of a portion of road here in town that is down near the river. The water overflowed onto the road and froze. It feels weird to say that we are under a flood warning and flash flood watch in the middle of winter.

I've actually been doing a little knitting since my last post. Well the post before the last post since my last one was a distraction with puppy cuteness post. 

I finished Bree's Christmas socks. 

These are the Lacy Rib Socks (ravelry)(non Ravelry). The yarn is Lorna's Laces Shepherd sock, colorway Iris Garden. It's an easy pattern, perfect for tv knitting but is a bit more interesting then plain stockinette socks. I may make a pair for myself in the future.

A doll blanket (ravelry)(non ravelry) for Kaity's American Girl doll.

Kaity has one of the daybed doll beds from Target  and it only comes with the blanket for the bed and nothing for the trundle bed. I used some sugar and cream cotton yarn from my stash. It used less then 200 yards. Yes I know I could have just made my own pattern up but that would have require a bit more effort then I wanted to put into it at the moment. I'm planning on browsing my stitch pattern books and make something a little lacy with some Dream in Color Classy. I have a full skein of purple leftover from Bree's sweater. One can never have to many blankets for your doll bed.

Scrunchable Scarf (ravelry)(non ravelry).

I really love this scarf pattern. It's so simple you don't need a pattern. This is one of the scarves I'm making for the 2011 Special Olympics. The drop off for Montana is here in Great Falls so I can take them in instead of having to mail them this year. The yarn is Red Heart Super Saver color numbers 886 and 512. If you're interested here's the website with all the info. I know some of the states have already hit their deadlines but you can knit for any state.

I've also started a new pair of "on the go" socks for myself.

These always take a little longer since I normally only work on them when I'm not at home. The yarn is Opal Rainforest, Flamingo colorway. I'm using my basic toe up pattern with a short row heel. I haven't decided if I'll do a ribbed cuff or a picot edge.

I'll be soon be starting my knitting project for my TLE swap partner. I really need to finish the last test knit I'm working on. I'm about halfway through so it won't be long. I'm not sure if she reads my blog (have a good number of subscribers but a lot of people don't comment) but I have it linked to my Ravelry account so she can easily visit so I won't post anything to give it away. I can say that I'm pretty sure I've found yarn and a pattern to knit that I think she will love.

Now on to some puppy pictures. I know there are a few of you out there that want some new pictures of Penelope. 

I snapped this one the other day.

Zeus crawled into Penelope's crate and fell asleep. Penelope decided she was tired too and crawled in to take a nap with him. He woke up when she crawled in, gave to low, short growls then laid his head down and went back to sleep.

This one was taken a couple of days ago.

Bree decided to crawl into Penelope's crate and play with her. They stayed in there for a good 20 minutes. Penelope actually likes her crate and will crawl in there to sleep when I'm not sitting somewhere where she can lay across my feet.

It warms my heart to see those to finally playing together. Not to say Zeus doesn't still growl at Penelope because she's being a pain in the butt. In the background you'll probably hear a bunch of girly screams. Shawn kept scaring the girls and at one point Bree ran into the room where I was at. 

Looking Forward to Warmer Temps

The weatherman keeps promising warmer temps but unfortunately he has been wrong in the past and I can no longer trust his information. This time he's promising a warm up into the 40's (that's Fahrenheit) for Tues and Wed which means snow melt....woohoo! The snow has been around since a few days before Thanksgiving. I think it's time for it to go away. I guess time will tell if he's telling the truth or not. According to the local paper we got a total of 19.5 inches of snow in the month of Nov.....yikes! Actually it didn't starting snowing until like mid-Nov so that's almost 20 inches of snow in a two week time frame. Wonder what the totals are for the higher elevations. Our elevation is under 4,000 feet.

We had freezing fog the other day and while it made a bigger mess of things it was rather pretty to see all the naked trees covered in a layer of white.

It kind of reminded me of the years when my parents had their christmas trees flocked. I remember one year the flocking was so thick the tree looked like it was hit with a blizzard. We use a fake tree in our house and I do miss the lovely pine smell in the house with a real tree. We decided to use a fake tree because the idiot cat we use to have ate all things green and it was easier to use a fake tree then to clean up cat vomit. We might do the real tree thing when we get our own home.

It now has a star that lights up on top. I've put the poor angel up for now. She doesn't sit very well on the tree. She was designed to fit over the top of a real tree so she's be retired for now. 

I have been doing a bit of knitting. Right now I'm working on test knits but before they came in I finished Kaity's socks and made good progress on Bree's.

Kaity's socks are done! The pattern is Lovely Lace Socks (ravelry)(non ravelry). 

The yarn is Lorna's Laces Shepherd sock in the Tickled Pink colorway. I think Kaity is really going to like them. Her feet are still small enough that I can get a pair of socks out of a 50g skein of yarn and still have leftovers to make socks for Bree.

Bree's socks are almost to the heel flap. 

The pattern is Lizzie's Lacy Rib Socks. (ravelry)(non ravelry). The yarn is Lorna's Laces Shepherd sock in the Iris Garden colorway. I'll be able to knock these out in another day or so. I just need to finish up the test knits I'm working on.

Zeus is giving me the "Mom why the hell did we have to get a puppy?" look and yes he really needs to go see the groomer.

He's still iffy on the puppy now that she's home. He'll play with her outside and upstairs when we take the girls up to put them in bed but he wants nothing to do with her when we're downstairs.....silly little dog. Oh and her name is Penelope or Penny for short. We still haven't decided on her full AKC registration name but at least she has a name.

Penelope sacked out under my desk. She's so angelic when she's sleeping. Then of course she wakes up and the terror begins. I can't believe how much she's grown since we brought her home and she hasn't been home with us a full week yet. 

Brrrrr....It's Cold Outside

Winter is definitely kicking it into gear now. Looking at this weeks forecast I'm wondering if maybe Mother Nature isn't trying to make up for lost time since we had all that warmer then normal weather.

Remember the pic I posted last month where the sun was shining and it was gorgeous outside. Well here's a refresher:

Now you remember? Alrighty then....here's what it looks like this afternoon. Shawn is now very happy that he got the snow thrower. Instead of spending an hour shoveling snow it took him about 15 minutes to clear our stuff and another 15 minutes to clear the sidewalks in front of our neighbors on each side of our house.

Needless to say I've opted to stay home and drink tea instead of going out in this stuff. We were going to go out to PetCo last night but the roads were so slick that we decided to stay home. It rained for part of the day yesterday and then the temps started dropping in the early evening and by the the time it was bedtime for the girls we were seeing snow. Rain + Drop in temps + snow = nasty roads and lots of accidents. In a four hour period yesterday there were over 50 accidents here in town.

I've been working on Kaity's Christmas socks.

The pattern is Child's Lovely Lace socks (ravelry)(non ravelry)...the non rav link is to Patons website so you will have to be logged on your account to view it. The pattern is one of their freebie patterns. The yarn is Lorna's Laces Shepherd sock in the Tickled Pink colorway. These have been set aside so I can work on some test knits but they aren't going to take long to finish. It'll take even less time to finish up Bree's Christmas socks.

I also received my order from Knit Picks.

This is one of the sock yarn kits that was on sale. It came with four different colors of Stroll Tonal sock yarn and a pattern booklet that contains 12 different patterns. This kit with the purple yarn isn't for sale anymore but they do have the other two for sale. $25.99 for 4 skeins of sock yarn and 12 patterns is a pretty good deal.

I Think It May Be Fall!

Ah, cooler temps are finally showing up here. It seems so weird because wearing shorts in the middle of Sept is not the norm for here in this area and definitely not in October. Of course as soon as it starts dumping snow on us I'll be complaining about it being too cold. At least Shawn bought a snow thrower which will make my life much easier when he isn't home.

Shawn was told that he has to go to the NCO Academy now that he has passed his PT (physical training) test. Yup, he finally passed it. Failing his PT test is what got our orders to Germany cancelled. I still regret that we didn't go. While it would have been a major pain in the butt at first I think it would have been a wonderful experience. So anyway, Shawn's been selected to go to in January to Colorado for 6 weeks. They wanted him to go now but with my med issues still not figured out he doesn't want to leave. At least if I hurt too badly he can help me out around the house or help me get to the doctor. If my meds are still an issue in January we can get the class pushed back again. I'm really hoping that my pain is better by then though. I shudder to think that I will still be feeling like this several months from now. The steroids worked great but I finished up the last of the pack the other day and I can feel the stiffness and pain coming back.

The tree guys came back and gave us a new tree....woohoo!

Here's hoping the poor thing survives the winter. The tree provides a bit of shade on this window which unfortunately is huge....it's about 6 feet tall by about 6-7 feet wide. I wanted to put some curtains up to make the girls playroom look a little more homey and friendly but the damn things are going to be expensive. I need to check into the cost for a valance for the window which should be a bit cheaper plus it can most likely be used when we move. The whole house is painted white, the ceiling fans are white and the carpet is a boring gray....looks like the carpet is dirty kind of gray. I seriously need a little color in this house that isn't going to require days worth of repainting walls when we move. I swear they would have put put white door knobs on but I think they got a better deal on the cheapo tacky gold ones that are on every door in this house. 

I'm making great progress on my moms Rosalind Shawl (ravelry)(non ravelry). 

This is a great knit and it's going quickly. I just started the 5th repeat of Chart B. There are six repeats of Chart B before moving on to Chart C. It does seem a little small but I know it will grow a lot when I block it. It's amazing how much lace grows after a good soak in wool wash. My Bee Fields and Whispering Pines shawls looked small until I blocked them and they are huge. Ah, the powers of blocking!

My Rainbow and Cloud socks are working up quiet nicely.

I've placed my waste yarn where I want to knit the heel and I'm just going to keep going till I get close to running out of yarn. I want to make these as long as I can.

I started a pair of socks for my mom.

The pattern is Catnip Socks (ravelry)(non ravelry) and the yarn is Zen Yarn Garden Bling! in the Blue Spruce colorway. I don't really need to rush on these since it's still in the 90s at home and it doesn't appear that there will be a drop in temp anytime soon. So needless to say moms not really wearing handknit socks much right now. 

I've been working on making some new dishrags for my Granny. 

The pattern is Grandmother's Favorite (ravelry)(non ravelry) which is my favorite basic dishrag pattern. Granny is staying with my mom for the winter so I have the whole winter to get a stack of them made for her. I'm off to a pretty good start though. Six done so far and number 7 is on the needles. I think I'll stop when I hit 10 dishrags. She's also requested some nylon scrubbies so I'll start those after I finish the dishrags.

Yarn order from Knit Picks came in today.

The purple yarn is Comfy Worsted and is going to be used to make a blanket for my cousin who is due in November. My cousin is having a little girl! Yippy I get to knit for a little girl again. It's been boy after boy in my family so it'll be a nice change to knit something girly. I haven't settled on a pattern yet. I have three picked out. These are all Ravelry Links: blanket 1, blanket 2, blanket 3 and blanket 4. I want something simple since I don't have a whole lot of time to knit this. I'm leaning towards blanket 1 or blanket 4.

The rest of the yarn is mine to try out and make a few new cowls for myself because I didn't want the purple yarn to be lonely and I needed to hit the free shipping mark. The dark green is Capra DK (merino/cashmere blend), the red one on the right is Gloss HW (merino/silk blend) and the red on the left is City Tweed HW (merino/donegal tweed blend). I want to see who I'd like any of these for a sweater. I wear cowls a lot in the winter so if after being abused and washed all winter they still look good then they'll work for a sweater. My cowls tend to get a lot of wear because they rub against my jacket and then there is the constant wear on them from getting pulled over my head and stuffed in a pocket. I think they get more abuse then a sweater ever would.

I'm expecting my Lord of the Rings shipment in any day now and I ordered a new row counter bracelet that has a clasp instead of the toggle so I'll post about them in my next post. I'll probably start the baby blanket by this weekend, provided I can settle on a pattern. I'm trying really hard to get back into a regular blog posting habit.
